John Proctor takes the role of the main character in the Crucible. He is one of the most respected people in the village of Salem because he is known as a hard and honest worker, he does not sin and is fair to everyone. He believes he is the cause of the witch-hunt because he had an affair with his housekeeper Abigail Williams who is 17, he believes because of this affair the whole village starts to point fingers at eachother and cry witch. John is a man of strong moral beliefs, he is concerned for the safety of his family and himself, but he has a guilty conscience. He cares of nothing for the beliefs of any of the other people in the town and what Parris, thinks either. After trying to avoid involvement in the witch trials and benifit himself he was later prosecuted for witchery and sentenced to hang along with his pregnant wife. John tries to avoid any involvement in the Salem witch trials to protect his image, following these events he trys to save everyone’s lives by admitting to commiting adultery and ends up losing the trial along with his life. He did have a chance to live but instead of signing away his name to the court and his soul to keep his life, he wanted to die honorably with his friends not without a name, a soul, and with guilt.

“John Proctors decision to die is reasonable and believable”.

Actions: What actions do they take to get what they want?
In order to get what he wants, John threatens "... I will bring your guts into your mouth but goodness will not die for me". He confesses to having an affair with Abigail because he is trying to get his wife, Elizabeth or goody proctor out of prison.

Obstacles: What is in their way? What obstacles keep them from getting what they want?
The obstacles that are in Jonhs way is the court becuase when he tries to save his wife from going to jail it isnt that easy becuase of the judges also it is getting hard for him to keep his reputation becuase he had an affair with Mary warren which can get him in heaps of trouble

Conflicts: What type of conflict does that character face? How do they deal with conflict?
The type of conflict he faces are one of the most harsh ones. He was convicted as he was doing witchery even thou he realy didn't do it but becuase he new how the town run and how he could get out of it he didnt want to do that. He didn't accuse anyone else for doing it and becuase of that it meant he was doing it and in the end he was hanged. He deals with these thing well but I think to well because by stoping the witchery he kind of said he done it and becuase of this he was hanged.

Motivations: What do they want? What is their motivation in the play?

John is just one of the charactors that live just out of the town that just do their own thing farming and looking after his family. His motivation in the play is to try to keep his wife out of trouble with all the whichery and in the end he does do this but becuase of that he was hanged.
